Handling of Ceramic Products

Ceramics have been a traditional type of tableware in Japan for centuries. Each piece is handmade, resulting in slight variations in finish, color, and texture. We hope you will cherish and enjoy using these pieces as they develop character over time.

Initial Use

Ceramic pieces are fired at high temperatures ranging from 900°C to 1200°C. The clay used is porous and highly absorbent. If used without preparation, the ceramics may absorb liquids such as sauces, soy sauce, and oils, which could lead to stains and odors. Therefore, it is recommended to perform a process called “mesome” (sealing) before first use. This involves boiling the ceramic in rice washing water to fill the gaps in the clay and glaze, reducing water and oil absorption and preventing stains and odors.

  1. Place enough rice washing water to submerge the ceramic in a pot.
  2. Boil gently over low heat for 15–20 minutes.
  3. Allow the pot to cool, then rinse and dry the ceramic thoroughly.

If sealing is difficult, soak the ceramic in plenty of water for half a day to one day before use, and then wipe off the moisture.

Tips for Use

Before serving food:

  • • For warm dishes, rinse the ceramic with lukewarm water.
  • • For cold dishes, rinse with cold water.

This helps prevent sauces and oils from staining and maintains the dish’s temperature—keeping warm food warm and cold food cold.

With each use, the ceramic will develop a smooth texture, allowing you to enjoy the aging process over time.

Care Instructions

  • • Wash with a soft sponge and neutral detergent.
  • • Avoid storing the ceramic while still wet, as retained moisture can cause mold and odors.

Storage

If storing for a long period, dry the ceramic thoroughly before putting it away in a cabinet.

Removing Stains and Odors

  • • Stains from sauces, tea, or coffee may build up with frequent use.
  • • To remove odors, soak the ceramic in a solution of baking soda and water for half a day to one day, then dry thoroughly.

Microwave, Dishwasher, and Oven Use

  • • The ceramic is safe to use in microwaves and household dishwashers.
  • • Do not use the ceramic in an oven.
