SUSTAINABILITY - 03 SHIGARAKI-YAKI
Hissan Pottery, a family-run ceramic work-shop spanning multiple generations, has been creating Shigaraki ware that blends traditional craftsmanship with modern design and technology. Established in the 1870s, the workshop has continually adapted its creations to meet the changing needs of each era.
The workshop itself is rich in history, housed in a timeworn building. Beneath it lies the soil of Lake Biwa, an ancient lake shaped by millennia of geological shifts. This soil, abundant in organic matter, has nurtured the unique clay that gives Hissan Pottery’s ceramics their distinctive characteristics.
