From the founding of the company by Ogawa Sannojo, fourth generation, Miyoji, began manufacturing and selling vases for the schools of Shigaraki. The distinctive vases, which were a balance of traditional Shigaraki wares and Hissan’s techniques, later became used by Ikenobo, Obara, and other heads of schools with the largest production of handmade wares in Japan. Hissan also began manufacturing kappo tableware. The company began doing business with high-class ryotei all over Japan.

From 1999 to the present
After Kimio, the current fifth generation head of the company, took over the family business, the company shifted its focus to ceramic tableware. Rather than mass-producing made-to-order products, he aims to provide services that value one-on-one relationships with customers, applying his own sensitivity and sensibility to ceramic tableware production based on the techniques of tea ceremony utensils and flower vases.

5th Generation Owner
Kimio Ogawa

Ogawa’s craftsmanship is based on his unwavering sensibilities towards texture, color, overall balance, and harmony. Backed by his long experience. There are always works of art that will be handed down for generations, but there is always the subjectivity of the people who use, view, and love them. The ultimate objectivity that captures this is what allows him to creates the beauty of his works.
